Keeping Kids Healthy: A Pediatrician’s Guide By Lou Hampers


Parents want the best for their children, and when it comes to their health and well-being, that’s no exception. As a pediatrician, it’s my job to keep kids healthy. If your child is like most kids out there—active, curious, messy—it can be hard to keep them safe from illness and disease. But as a parent, it is important that you know how to practice prevention by making sure your child eats well, sleeps well, gets enough exercise, and doesn’t get sick very often.

Practice Prevention

It’s important to keep on top of all the ways you can prevent things in your life. Wash your hands often, avoid ill people, and get a flu shot every year. According to Lou Hampers, MD, if they aren’t, they can spread their germs to others who aren’t immune, such as infants or the elderly, who can’t fight infections as well.
Eat Well

Encourage your children to consume fruits and greens. If they don’t like healthy foods, don’t force them to consume them, but make sure they get enough vitamins and minerals. If your child refuses to consume a particular food, try again later in the day or on another day; he may change his mind. If not, resist the temptation to consume unhealthy foods such as sweets or soda.

Keep Clean, Enjoy Life

Washing your hands is the best way to prevent the spread of germs. Here’s how:

• Wet your hands with warm water and apply soap.
• Rub all finger, thumb, and palm surfaces for at least 20 seconds.
• Rinse well under running water.

Children Should Get At Least An Hour Of Physical Activity Each Day

Asking your child what they like to do when they’re not playing video games or watching TV and suggesting those things can help you get them to exercise.

Sleep is essential. It’s one of the most essential things you can do to keep your children healthy–and not just physically. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to be able to concentrate in school and to have overall improved mental health.
